The hand of a sovereign God guided the founders of America. Thomas Jefferson once asked, "Can the liberties of a nation be secure, when we have removed the conviction that these liberties are the gift of God?"
As we celebrate our nation’s 237 Birthday it is now an unquestionable reality that the United States is no longer the beacon of freedom and hope for all mankind, that it once most assuredly once was. As America careens like a runaway train toward not only a fiscal cliff, but also a moral cliff, many opinions can be heard as to why, including changing demographics and technology. But in this preachers humble opinion the evidence is relatively clear: an increasing number of the citizens of this great land, in their pursuit of pleasure and comforts, have turned their backs on the basic guidelines of human behavior and human decency as espoused by the Bible and have instead placed more and more trust in man and in particular the government.
The moral fiber of our country, and the religious basis upon which this nation was founded, is open today in the minds of many of our fellow citizens to reevaluation and reinterpretation. The message being conveyed and taught to an ever larger portion of a willing and susceptible American population is: there are no restraints on personal behavior and as long as it appears that my actions hurt no one but self, I am free to do whatever I choose.
As this mindset gains a firmer and stronger foothold in any culture, a calamitous cycle begins. First there is Rebellion against a Holy God and His Word which leads to Retribution and judgment from that very God. Rather than face this reality, many American’s do not have the personal fortitude and Godly determination to make the difficult choices and change course, as we slip ever so much closer to Sodom and Gomorrah. Is our descent into chaos unstoppable?
We need far more than a repackaging of conservative messaging. We need a return to the God of the Bible. The key to peace and prosperity lies in a relationship with God and striving to live by the traditional moral and ethical guidelines found in the Bible. In the 1840's Alexis de Tocqueville wrote: "Liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith." Once established, liberty cannot be sustained without a just and moral society.
Proverbs 14:34, says “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” My prayer for my beloved country on this her 237th Birthday, is that She Will Return To God And The Bible!
